The Hows and Whys of Dirt Jumping

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

One of the many sports commonly involving mountain bikes is known as dirt jumping. This particular sport is based on the idea of using shaped mounds of dirt to push yourself into the air. After takeoff, the challenge is to regain control over your vehicle of choice to ensure a safe landing in a specific spot. The sport can be played with several different rides. The most common of these are 20 inch wheels BMXs, Cruisers, mountain bikes and freestyle motocross. Of these, the mountain bike is without a doubt the favored choice.

Dirt jumping is not considered a competitive sport, but rather one you participate in for the simple enjoyment of it. The bikes used are manufactured by smaller, less known companies, which adds a little to the exclusiveness of the sport. Dirt jumpers consider their sport to be part of the underground, which is probably why there aren’t that many competitions. Over the past few years, companies have begun to organize competitions with cash prizes for dirt jumping, but it still hasn’t reached that stage where almost everyone has heard about it.

Some seem to think that dirt jumping, as a sport, is identical to mountain bike racing. This statement is false. While the two sports have some aspects in common, dirt jumping focuses more on the height and duration of the jump than who finishes the race faster. In addition, the number and quality of the tricks performed is also a factor. It is a far more dangerous sport than racing and takes many years and a lot of practice before the bruises stop appearing.

However, not all mountain bikes are necessarily suited for dirt jumping. The frames tend to be smaller than those used for other purposes and usually only have a rear brake. The size of the wheels is either 24 or 26 inches and the forks are rigid or short travel. The wheel size is especially important since it determines the shape of the takeoff. This is why, before starting to learn the sport, you should make sure your mountain bike is up to the task. Accidents have been known to happen because the participant did not have the proper equipment. Taking care of your mountain bike is extremely important, not only so that you can prevent yourself from breaking a leg or worse, but also so that you come out on top when you do those dangerous jumps.

Sport Specific Training : Train To Improve At Your Sport

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Are you a professional athlete or a student seeking to improve performance in a sport? Read on, for tips on how to improve your overall fitness and performance in different sports. Think yourself lucky because there is no dearth of good training institutes for sportspersons today, unlike in the past. If you are a good sportsperson, you are also likely to receive grants that can help you pay the costs of sport specific training.

Most of the reputed institutes providing sport specific training have a low instructor-to- student ratio so that students get individual attention. However, this does not mean that a student always exercises or practices in isolation. Training in a group is also provided to help participants imbibe the correct technique, depending upon the nature of the sport specific exercise.

These training programs can last several weeks and are conducted on the basis of a lesson plan, which usually includes warm up exercise, gym time, running, and swimming. Most amateur athletes face injury because they do not train under qualified professionals. This also hampers their chance of becoming professionals. At a training institute you will be constantly guided by a trainer and your progress monitored. You will be taught how to improve running mechanics, start, and skips. You will also be put through quickness drills to improve reflexes and react explosively.

Whether you are a professional or an amateur, consider the following points before and during training
– Go for a program that is suitable for your needs and abilities; just don’t join a program because your friends have joined it
– Enjoy your training; don’t worry about graphs and charts unless you are a professional athlete
– Choose your pace, and let the trainer know if you are being pushed too hard; its your body after all
– Look for variation, that is, exercises should vary through the day and across days. This will prevent boredom and inefficiency from setting in due to the same routine
– If you miss out exercise on a particular day, just take it casually; loss of one session will not hamper your prospects
– Use proper equipment and sports gear
– Set realistic goals after assessing your potential
– Be patient and don’t expect fabulous results after training a couple of weeks. Consistency and avoidance of overstrain will pay off in the long run

It is not only athletes or soccer players who require sport specific training, even golfers, who engage in comparatively less physical activity require training to improve fitness, reduce injury, and enhance technique.

I want to race sport cars, how do I attain that goal?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I want to race in events like the KONI Challenge Series, I believe its called sport car racing, but Im not sure. Its the type of racing done with Sport cars, and is done on a non-oval track. First off, what is the name of this type of racing, second, how do I begin racing like this? I`m 15 and Im going to purchase my first car in a couple of months and start off drag racing.
Thanks.

It’s generally called sports car racing, specifically the KONI Challenge is considered Endurance racing.

Drag racing probably isn’t the best place to start, autocross might be better. Check out SCCA, NASA or other car clubs for autocross events.

When you want to start wheel to wheel road racing, you could start in karting, pro racing schools like skip barber or bertil roos, or SCCA club racing.

To make the next step up, I would suggest the VW TDI cup (http://www.vw.com/vwhype/motorsport/en/us/#/jetta_tdi_cup/).

From there, if you do well, you should have enough experience to jump right into KONI Challenge.

If you have decent funding this is actually pretty feasible. If not, you’ll have to get lucky and find some sponsorship or win some shootouts or something to move up.

What does the sport of CRICKET have to do to be popular in the USA?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Let’s not lie to ourselves, Football is the greatest sport in the US right now, but no one gives a crap about Rugby or even Soccer.

Baseball is in 2nd place, and no one gives a crap about Cricket.

What would the sport of Cricket have to change in order to be as popular as Baseball in America?

For example, what types of rule changes?

and an extra question, Which sport is better? And if Baseball is truly better, why does Cricket continue to exist?

hot chicks in even hotter outfits. I would watch.

Quality Athletic Shoes Are A Must Have For Serious Athletes

Monday, September 28th, 2009

If you are one of those active people that are heavily into exercising, hiking, sports, or any other type of physical activity that requires you to be on your feet quite regularly, then quality athletic shoes are not so much a want but a must have.

It’s important to take care when choosing the right kind of athletic shoes for your feet, as the wrong fitting and or incorrect shoe type can result in problems with your joints further down the line. With a few simple tips, you will be ready to shop for athletic shoes and will soon be stepping out with confidence as you pursue your athletic activities.

One brand, Fendi shoes for men, are available as good quality athletic shoes, dress shoes, and also casual shoes that will go well with jeans and the like. Another name worth noting is Prada as they also have a good range to suit various activities. But unless you are experienced in purchasing athletic shoes, it’s advisable to seek assistance from a trained retailer who should be able to advise you on the correct footwear for your particular build and activity.

Although a good pair of sports shoes may not come cheap, it’s important to remember that you are investing in quality that will take care of your joints, as most athletic pursuits are what’s known as ‘impact’ sports which can be play very heavy on your limbs and ligaments if not protected well.

Another brand of athletic shoes that are becoming ever more popular is the range offered by New Balance. New Balance shoes are comfortable athletic shoes with an emphasis placed on walking shoes. They are offered in a number of styles with varying features and provide whatever you need out of an athletic shoe.

For women, Nike shoes are the most popular brand of athletic shoes on the market, but there are others, and recent years have seem more creativity in women’s athletic shoes both in design and style.

In fact there are many manufacturers of athletic shoes out there, and far too many to review here, but the good news for us sports folks is that the manufactures are in high competition with their most comparable rivals, which keeps both quality and pricing to the advantage of we consumers.

Almost all companies that manufacture athletic shoes these days have gotten wind of the new, innovative technology that has been consistently improving the quality of athletic shoes for every type of sport. We really are spoilt for choice these days.

I will just end on emphasizing that when it comes to choosing the right athletic footwear, it’s not worth skimping on the cost unless you’re just purchasing for fashion purposes. Protective athletic footwear protects you from the hard knocks that can come with high impact exercise, and the better the quality, the better that protection.

More Party Games Better The Birthday

Monday, September 28th, 2009

When throwing a party it is always nice to hear guest compliment your party. A relay race is always fun at a family party. Make a Birthday (or any reason for a gift) into a fun time for all. All parties can be fun, even adult parties, they can be as fun as children’s parties, of course the games and activities will be different. If we didn’t have so much funny at parties what would be the purpose of having them.

Some of the activities are relatively tame while others can be quite steamy, depending on what level you play. Don’t forget to incorporate the five main party activities of every party which have been developed over the history of parties.

Here are some activities that you can do at your child’s birthday party. Something very similar to pin the tale on the donkey is pin the wart on the witch’s nose, all you need to do is get a photocopy of a witch or you an draw the witch, get green play dough and roll it up in little balls, blind fold the child and have them stick it on the witch. A good selection of child party games will keep the group interested and the party running smoothly. When planning a child birthday party, just a little bit of organization will go a long way. Paper airplane contest, have each child make a paper airplane. Make a different pilot for each child and either put a number or name on the pilot to identify the child. Learn how to give each classic child party game idea its own unique twist to fit your party theme.

The important part of a child’s birthday party is the time you spend playing the games, it creates laughter and fun. If well planned, they can make great memories for the birthday child and guests alike, if not, they can be a minefield of problems.

More of the popular party games are the games that are played at night with glow sticks, using these glow sticks have turned into a nighttime sport game. Party games for an outdoor summer party can be very rowdy and active.

Water can add an element to your party which can make it exciting, since you can use the water for many different games, like water balloon toss. In this game you fill up red, white and blue balloons with water and divide the guests into teams of two. Whatever team is able to keep the balloons from popping will become the winners of the game.

If you don’t like the idea of water balloons you can set up a contest between some of the kids to see who can pop as many balloons with their bums as possible within say the frame of a couple of minutes.

You don’t want to leave out any one so be sure that each child gets some type of prize for trying. To avoid tears and hurt feelings, I would suggest that you provide one larger prize for the winner, and give out cheap “runner-up” prizes to all the other children.
